As you know, I'm a sucker for baby knitting. I think it comes down to the fact that I'm so impatient! I'll never be a conscientious kntting - you know, those really disciplined types who can spend hours focussing on complex fair isle and insterstarsia. I lose my concentration too easily - I spend too much time watching Grays Anatomy and not enough on what my needles are (or rather, should be!) doing.
I use knitting as one of my main forms of relaxation - it's no conincidence I've called my website blissed out knitting! I like the repetitive rhythm of simple stitches like stockinetter and garter stitch. Now, I'm not saying I can't do the more fancy stitches - sometimes adding a lace panel or edging to a garment can create beautiful effects that the simple stitches can never compare to. But for me, these stitches take time and patience (and usually a lot of swearing!) and I think my natural tendency is to go for patterns that are predominantly in the vanilla stitches with some added touches of lace or beading or whatever.
Baby patterns tend to fit this mould and I love the fact that they knit up so quickly. I used to knit from my Mum's stash of ancient knitting patterns passed down from my grandmother from the 1940s and 50s. The baby patterns were little matinee jackets, lace edged cardigans and doily like booties. And they were ALWAYS knitting in white! Now the fashion is for brighter colours and slightly less 'fancy' patterns. Rowan's RYC range have some gorgeous patterns and my son was practically kitted out for the first 12 months of his life in patterns from the Debbie Bliss Simple Baby Knits book.
I've come acorss lots of beautiful free baby knittng patterns in my online research for my website. I was really impressed once I started looking. There are some fab and funky ones, more traditional and some simple ones that are great for beginners. I've put them all on one page so that they're easy to find (and at least other people can get to them now, instead of them just being stuck on the favourites list on my computer!) http://www.blissedoutknitting.com/free_baby_knitting_patterns_3.htm
My one year old neice came to visit yesterday (well she's sort of my neice - she's my partner John's sisters daughter so that kind of makes her my niece, just not by marriage) and she's sooo cute and boy, doesn't she know it! She has this really funny way of performing something - like feeding herself or making funny noises, and pausing with a little smile just to make sure everyone's noticed! She had us all in stitches and Cole loved her - he was giving her his toys (at one point we came into the room and he was balancing spiderman on her head!) So I may well have to knit her something really girly with flowers on - like this cute little jacket
- when else do you get to truly enjoy being a girl if not at 1 years old?
I hope you get a chance to knit that baby sweater. It's very cute ... plus they grow up so quickly. My niece is 8 already and is almost as tall as me!
